Alghero

Alghero
Situated in the north west coast of Sardinia, its name is thought to be derived from the "oceanic poseidon" (erroneously called seaweed!!), a plant that lives in the clean waters that form part of the beautiful beaches in Alghero.
The town is divided into two different parts: the Alguer vella (old or historical), the Alguer nova (new).
The old town is characterised by its wonderful ancient walls which have protected its citizens from the frequent attacks and invasions by invaders from across the sea. In the Historical Centre there are many old stone towers: "Porta Terra", "Saint Giacomo" and "Sperone", the latter being built as lookout posts along the shoreline.
Because of its geographic position and the beauty of the island, it has been the subject of conquest by many different peoples, and these historical events have shaped the Catalan culture. In the ancient streets of the old town you can see the Cathedral of St. Maria with its Gothic style bell tower, the Church of the Misericordia of St. Francisco with its beautiful cloisters, where every year are held numerous festivals of local folklore.
